LVL wearable hydration monitor

We’ve all read recommendations on how much we should drink to stay properly hydrated. The problem is that there’s no agreed-upon rate of said hydration — with some touting the “eight glasses a day” missive and others suggesting less or more. We also lack the knowledge of how much water we’ve actually absorbed, especially when it’s hot or we’re exercising.

Intel signs deal with Delphi to supply self-driving computing power

That wearable might accidentally reveal your PIN number

Motion data that your wearable collects from accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers could be used to break into your bank account or any other keypad lock, according to a paper co-authored by the Stevens Institute of Technology and the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University. Researchers were able to develop an algorithm that uses the motion data to create the exact pattern of a PIN or passcode with impressive accuracy.

Lenovo's Moto isn't planning new smartwatches in the near future

Lenovo Moto on Thursday confirmed it's not planning a successor to the Moto 360 or any new smartwatch in the near future, as excitement around the wearables market slows down. Speaking to The Verge, Shakil Barkat, head of global product development at Moto, said the company doesn't "see enough pull in the market to put [a new smartwatch] out at this time." It may revisit the space if technologies for the wrist improve, the executive said. Barkat also confirmed Moto will shy away from a yearly update cycle for wearables. "Wearables do not have broad enough appeal for us to continue to build on it year after year," he told The Verge. Moto launched the latest Moto 360 in 2015, replacing the original 2014 model. ZDNet ranked the Moto 360 as one of the top smartwatches on the market at the time. Moto isn't throwing wearables completely out. "We believe the wrist still has value and there will be a point where they provide value to consumers more than they do today," Barkat said. The wearables market has shown slowing growth in 2016. Research firm IDC speculates smartwatches will take off when they get independent cell connections and better pricing..

Why Fitbit buying Pebble makes sense — at least, in the short term

Late yesterday it was reported by The Information that Fitbit is close to buying wearable startup Pebble, news that has since been independently confirmed by The Verge. Fitbit and Pebble have been in the final stages of the deal since before the Thanksgiving holiday; the buying price has not yet been confirmed. While it ultimately might not be as good of a deal as Pebble would have hoped for, there are a lot of reasons why a Pebble-Fitbit deal makes sense.
